Many Christians struggle in their walk with God because they fail to understand the implications of their covenant relationship with Him. Christianity isn’t merely a religion—it’s a covenant, a sacred agreement that requires fulfillment of specific obligations. Just as a marriage requires both parties to honor their vows for the relationship to thrive, our covenant with God requires our faithful participation.
When we examine what happens in a marriage when one partner is unfaithful, we quickly realize that a simple “I’m sorry” doesn’t repair the damage. Similarly, our relationship with God requires more than casual apologies when we stray from our covenant obligations. God is merciful and kind, but He isn’t a pushover. While He gently nudges us toward the path of success and victory, He won’t force us to stay faithful. If we insist on straying, God will allow us to take detours—detours that often lead to unnecessary delays and challenges in our spiritual journey.
The good news is that faithfulness to our covenant brings steady victory and advancement. Deuteronomy 28:1,7 promises that if we fully obey the Lord and carefully follow His commands, He will set us high above all nations and grant us victory over our enemies. Unlike the Old Testament covenant that contained numerous complex requirements, the New Covenant through Jesus Christ is remarkably accessible. Its requirements align with our new nature in Christ, building our character and transforming us to represent God on earth.
So what does it mean to service this covenant with God? First, we must commit to daily spiritual disciplines—prayer, Bible study, and worship. These aren’t optional activities but essential covenant obligations. Set specific times each day to connect with God through morning and evening “sacrifices” of prayer and worship. During these times, we should worship until we experience God’s presence “like a warm blanket,” pray in tongues to generate spiritual power, and study the Word to understand the covenant’s benefits and requirements.
Fasting should accompany our prayer life. Whether it’s daily intermittent fasting or dedicating specific days to fasting, this discipline positions us to be more attuned to our spiritual nature and God’s voice. Spiritual growth and advancement are virtually impossible without incorporating fasting into our covenant relationship.
Another crucial aspect of maintaining our covenant is generous giving. The New Testament outlines several types of giving, each with specific rewards: giving to the poor, offering to ministers of the gospel (prophet’s offering), honoring parents, supporting apostolic work, freewill offerings, first fruits, hospitality, and fulfilling vows. While tithing specifically was an Old Testament requirement, New Testament believers should recognize that our entire income belongs to God, who may require any portion of it at any time. Many believers find that maintaining at least the 10% baseline (or more) helps discipline their giving and produces consistent results in their finances.
Regularly renewing the covenant through communion is another essential practice. As often as possible—daily, weekly, or several times a week—we should partake of communion, remembering Christ’s sacrifice and reaffirming our covenant relationship. This isn’t merely tradition but a powerful spiritual practice that Jesus instructed us to continue “until He returns.”
Finally, our covenant faithfulness must extend beyond private spiritual practices to how we treat others. Christianity isn’t a “private holiness bubble” but a river of life that flows through us to others. Living justly, showing mercy, and walking humbly with God are not optional virtues but evidence of a Spirit-led life. Justice toward God, ourselves, and our neighbors; mercy in bearing with one another and forgiving as we’ve been forgiven; and humility before God and others—these characteristics demonstrate our covenant faithfulness.
The New Covenant in Christ’s blood has marked us, blessed us, and given us access to heaven’s resources. By faithfully maintaining this covenant through daily spiritual disciplines, generous giving, regular communion, and Christlike character, we position ourselves to experience all the benefits this divine relationship offers. Remember, unfaithfulness leads to detours, but faithfulness leads to steady victory and advancement in every area of life.
